Reflexology is a simple science that deals with the principle that there are reflexes in the feet relative to each and every organ function and part of the human body.
Reflexology releases tension, it improves nerve and blood supply and restores balance to the body. It is when this balance or homeostasis is restored that the body can begin to heal itself.
It is a natural and drugless way of healing the body by using its own natural healing resources. One of the main benefits of reflexology is the profound deep relaxation that the mind and body is able to reach and thus allowing the healing process to be accessed. It is a very safe and effective way of helping the body to heal itself and we are able to treat most of the everyday problems which a patient would consult his or her GP about, with considerable results.
Everyday problems which may be treated include but are not limited to:
- Migraine and headaches
- Stress related illness
- Back problems
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Hormonal imbalances
- Menopausal difficulties
- Infertility problems
- Menstrual difficulties
- Skin problems
- Ear nose and throat conditions
- IBS & digestive problems
- Asthma
- Sleep Problems
- Sinus conditions
The reflexs points respond to the pressure applied by the reflexology practitioner, stimulating the body's own natural healing process. The body starts progressively clearing blockages, re-establishing energy flows and balancing itself, resulting in better health. Reflexology is a truly holistic treatment, balancing mind body and spirit. It is suitable for all age groups, and along with being used to treat specific conditions and illnesses, it can simply be enjoyed for general health, wellbeing and relaxation.
The physician's tomb at Ankhmahor, Saqqara in Ancient Egypt around 2330 BC depicting a reflexology treatment. The use of 'healing hands' to relieve human suffering dates back thousands of years. Evidence of their use in Ancient Egypt can be found at Saqqara, where a painting found in the tomb of Ankhmahor (a physician to the Pharaoh) appears to show a reflexology treatment being performed, dating back to about 2330 BC.

What to expect during a treatment
The first treatment session lasts for approx 1 and a half hours and includes a complimentary half an hour consultation, which allows me to take a medical history and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions or discuss any aspects of reflexology. The treatments and records are completely confidential and no information is entered or held on a computer.
The client then removes their socks and shoes, and reclines back in the chair which I provide, with maximum comfort aimed for. One of the benefits of reflexology that clients have repeatedly told me is the fact that they don't have to have any conscious awareness of having to turn over half way through. etc as is the case in some treatments such as massage. Therefore once the client has got really comfy, they know that for the next hour, it is their 'time out' to enjoy a profound level of relaxation and all that comes with it.
I never rush appointments or cram them in 'back to back', so that if the client requires a little extra time, it is not a problem. Whether it be to chat for a little longer or to allow them to raise back to full awareness without having to rush the process. As I believe it aids the healing process on all levels.
The actual reflexology treatment lasts for approx 1 hour, the full body is worked through the reflexes in the soles of the feet, finishing with a relaxing foot massage.
After the first treatment I always arrange a suitable time with the client to contact them, the following day, to have a chat about their experience and answer any questions that may have arisen since the treatment.
After the first treatment, sometimes a 'healing crisis' occurs, this may sound alarming but is nothing to be concerned about, just to be aware of. It is fully discussed with the client and a very individual process. It is basically a 'detoxification' in response to the reflexolgy, where the body attempts to rid itself of toxins, it usually last for 24 - 48 hours after the first treatment. Depending on the individual and their state of health. Their symptoms may temporarily worsen, or they may experience feelings of lethargy, cold like symptoms, tearfulness if an emotional release is needed. These are all positive signs that healing is taking place and are only temporary. Many people do not have any signs, it depends on the individual and their needs. Healing is an individual process and all our needs are unique to us, sometimes client's are instantly energised. That is why I like to speak to new clients after the initial treatment, to discuss how they found it and how they have been feeling. To answer any little niggling questions no matter how small or trivial they seem to the client. I genuinely want reflexology to be a positive experience and I am here to aid others.
How many sessions do I need?
That is entirely down to the individual and the reason why they are having reflexology. Depending on the reasons for the treatment sometimes only one session is required. Some chronic conditions take more time. Usually after the first few sessions both myself and the client are aware of how many sessions would be ideal. As a general rule of thumb, as in my own experienc six sessions sorted me out, followed by a monthly maintenence treatment.
You do not need to have any negative reasons to have reflexology, it could just be that you love the feeling of the amazing deep relaxation and ensuing feeling of general well-being. It really does have to be experienced to be believed!
